Over June 10-11th, NYBA Blues 13U Select played in a 4-team round robin tournament – the East Toronto Dodgers Classic.

The weather was once again a factor. Tournament organizers re-organized allowing one game on Friday and three games on Saturday. Select rules don’t allow a player to pitch and catch on the same day, so teams were required to do some serious planning.

The NYBA Blues started off with a big win on Friday night over East York Black.

On Saturday morning, a sluggish/unfocused group got off to a slow start against East Toronto Blue. The team fought back, but East Toronto came away with the 8-7 win.

With a renewed focus on “staying in and being focused on the game”, the 13U Select players moved on to play Toronto Playground Team 2. With a victory in this game, they earned a chance to re-play East Toronto Blue in the championship game.

Although far from perfect (and facing some fantastic pitching early on), the team battled and kept themselves in the hunt. Key defensive plays and timely hitting in the 5th and 6th innings, secured the 11-8 win and the tournament championship.

The NYBA Blues 13U Select team continues to grow. Players are learning what it means to be focused on the game, and are starting to demonstrate character when facing adversity. These are all essential components of starting to create a successful team culture.

Congratulations to the players of 13U Select!

Once again, a most special thank you to the parents who continue to support this team.
