NYBA 11U Select Place 2nd in Brampton Tournament
The NYBA 11U Select team played some great baseball in the Brampton Baseball Tournament, the first weekend of June, winning all 3 group stage games (11-5 vs. Brampton, 12-3 vs. Annette, and 14-4 vs. Royal York) and securing a spot in the Semi-Finals.
Eason Yang started Game 1 on the mound and North York exploded out of the gate with a 4-run mercy and shut-out defensive inning to put pressure on Brampton. Brampton answered by scoring 5-runs and holding North York to only 3-runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings.
With a 7-5 lead, Everett Cheung came in to relieve Oliver Nisker and shut the door on Brampton, pitching two shut-out innings and striking out the side after entering the game with the bases loaded.
North York scored 4 more runs in the 4th to pad their lead and put the game away.
The team followed up the Friday victory with wins against Annette and Royal York on Saturday, with Owen Mok and Ziming Guo pitching Game #2 and Adam Umar and Josh Miranda pitching in Game #3.
North York had the bats going on Saturday with 14 hits against Annette and 15 hits against Royal York.
Our 11U team out hit their opponents 42-8 over the first three games, with Kai Matiaszuk-Martin, Aaron Posman, Josh Miranda, and Adam Umar each recording 4 hits and Eason Yang, Everett Cheung, and Noah Singh each recording 5 hits through the group stage games.
The Sunday Semi-Final game against the undefeated (7-0 this season) Richmond Hill team was one of the best all-around games this team has played. Both teams came out with strong defensive innings, allowing no runs in the 1st.
North York found their offense in the 2nd inning, scoring 4-runs. The pitching and defence was strong from both teams in the 3rd and 4th with North York plating a single run in the 3rd and only 2-runs in the 4th.
After getting out of the 5th inning not allowing a single run, the team knew that 3 more runs would mercy Richmond Hill and end the game. After scoring 2-runs, Ziming Guo stepped up to the plate with a runner on board and smashed a home run to win the game (11-0).
Highlights included Ziming Guo, Owen Mok and Jayden Fung each racking up multiple hits and Eason Yang pitching a complete 2-hit, 0-run game.
After a short break, the first pitch of the Championship game vs. Barrie was thrown just after 12 noon.
North York started Jason Lal after making huge strides over winter training and pitching an immaculate inning last weekend. Struggling to get strike calls, North York found themselves down 3-1 after the 1st inning.
To shake things up, North York brought in Everett Cheung and got out of the 2nd without allowing any more runs. Barrie’s strong defence held North York scoreless and a series of walks, an hit batter, and a big hit that drove in 3-runs in the 4th made the score 8-1.
Noah Singh pitched well and got out of the 5th without allowing a run – helped by some amazing defensive support. North York fought back with 3-runs in the 5th and 6th innings, but Barrie scored another 4-runs in the 6th, making the score 12-4 going into the final inning. North York didn’t give up and battled hard, loading the bases after Noah drove in Eason to make the score 12-5. With Noah Singh, Owen Mok, and Jayden Lin on base, Oliver Nisker and Josh Miranda each hit with an opportunity to close the gap.
Unfortunately, Barrie’s defence was too strong and ended the game only allowing 2 more runs to score. Although North York out hit Barrie 12 to 6, it wasn’t enough and the Blues lost 12-7. It’s never fun losing in the finals, but the silver medals helped ease the pain.
The coaches and team parents are extremely proud of how well the team played this past weekend and look forward to more success in the future. Thanks to all the team families who played a huge role in making this past weekend so great and memorable!
