The NYBA 11U Select team started off the TBA weekend with a big 12-7 win against a strong Leaside 10U Select team coming off a big win against the Leaside 11U Select team. Adam Umar started on the mound and Noah Singh pitched 4 strong innings (allowing 2 hits, 0 earned runs, and striking out 5) of relief to seal the win. Jayden Fung led NYBA with two hits, while Jayden Lin led the team with three RBIs.

Following Friday night’s win, our NYBA 11U Select team faced off against our rival Leaside 11U Select team. North York pulled out in front, scoring 2 runs in the 3rd inning. However, Leaside loaded the bases in the top of the 4th before J.J hit a fence-clearing grand slam to put Leaside up 6-2. North York fought back scoring 4 innings in the bottom of the 4th to tie the game at 6-6. North York put hard throwing pitcher Everett Cheung on the mound to finish the game. Unfortunately, Everett C. was hurt slipping on the mound after only a handful of pitches. After taking Everett C. out of the game, Leaside answered with 5 more runs in the 5th.

After a lengthy weather delay, North York managed to score a single run in the bottom of the 5th to make the score 11-7. Leaside scored 3 more in the top of the 6th to make the score 14-7. With the possibility of scoring 10 runs in the final inning, North York fought hard, scoring 4 runs and bringing the tying run to the plate with only a single out in the bottom of the 6th. Unfortunately, Leaside 11U made some big defensive plays and ended the fierce comeback effort. Eason Yang started the game and pitched 3 scoreless innings before giving up the big grand slam. Owen Mok and Jason Lal came in after Everett C.’s injury and pitched 1 inning each. Eason Y. and Jayden F. led North York with two hits. Jayden F., Oliver Nisker, and Kai Matiaszuk-Martin each had two RBIs to led NYBA’s offense.

The Saturday afternoon game was a rematch against the 10U Leaside team. Owen M. started the game and pitched 2 strong scoreless innings before Kai M. came in and pitched 2.2 innings in relief, allowing 5 hits, 1 earned run, and striking out 5). Josh Miranda was called on to get the final out and close out the game. North York won this game 13-1 and earned a spot in the winner-take-all championship game. Eason Y., Adam U., and Jayden F. each recorded 2 hits with Eason Y. and Jayden F. also each recording a walk. Jayden F. led the team with three RBIs.

Sunday morning was a beautiful day for championship baseball. The team was ecstatic when Everett C. showed up in uniform and ready to play after injuring his ankle on Saturday. Everett C. took the mound to start the championship game for North York, while Leaside countered with Andre G. Both players pitched great, only allowing 2 runs each over 4 innings. North York opened the scoring by plating one in the 1st and Leaside answered back with a single run in the 2nd. Both teams scored another run in the 3rd and were shut out in the 4th. Josh M. entered the game in the 5th and shut down Leaside’s strong offense.

North York took the lead by scoring 2 in the bottom of the 5th before Leaside responded with 2 of their own in the top of the 6th to tie the game. North York managed to score another run in the bottom of the 6th and entered the 7th and final inning up by a single run. Leaside’s offense exploded scoring 3 runs against North York’s closer Ziming Guo, who had pitched a complete game no-hitter earlier in the season. Jayden F. started the bottom of the 7th with a bit hit, brining the tying run to the plate with 0 outs. Unfortunately, North York was not able to score and fell to a strong Leaside 11U team in an absolute heartbreaker. Aaron Posman led North York with 2 hits.

Although the result was not what we were hoping for, the coaching staff and the team parents are extremely proud of our players. They all made huge advancements in their baseball development, grew as human beings, and became a bonded team that played for and supported each other. One of things we’re most proud of is the respect and positive feedback (great play and sportsmanship) our team received from almost all of our opponents throughout the year. Even though we lost in three tournament finals, this has been another great and successful year. Looking forward to next season!!! GO BLUES!!!
